Encouraging open and honest talk about periods

The betty bus makes its first stop!

Catshill Middle School has been the first in the country to experience our exciting new education bus which aims to help young girls feel more comfortable learning about periods.

The betty bus hosted its first group of pupils from Catshill Middle School on Tuesday 21st March, supporting learning from the betty for schools programme - a new curriculum-linked period education programme for teachers of pupils aged 8-12.

Pupils took part in one-hour sessions with trained facilitators helping girls explore how periods can affect them both physically and emotionally and encouraging them to ask questions they may not feel comfortable raising in the classroom.

Rebecca Martin, Head of Partner Relations at betty for schools, said: “It has been fantastic to see such a positive response from the teachers and pupils at Catshill Middle School. All of the resources have been created to help empower teachers to deliver sessions about periods with confidence and to encourage open, respectful and honest conversations about periods and the way they affect girls.”

While female pupils were on the bus, boys had the opportunity to take part in a separate session on puberty, focusing on their understanding and attitude towards this perfectly natural time of month.

Janet Lodge, assistant headteacher at Catshill Middle School, said: “The betty bus is an exciting resource with interactive workshops where pupils can discuss and learn about issues that might potentially cause confusion, fear and upset in a safe and supportive environment. The workshops encouraged our pupils to discuss openly what can sometimes be a challenging topic to address.

Organising the bus was easy - communication with the betty for schools team has been excellent. The event has been well organised and the team have been flexible in their planning to fit with the timings of our school day."
